Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone over the age of 18 can enter the competition.

There is a £2.50 charge per submission.

You can enter each competition as many times as you like.

This competition’s genre is Sussex Crime. You are free to interpret this in any way you wish.

It is worth noting that sexual content, overly graphic horror and graphic adult scenes are not what we are looking for.

Also, we don’t like swear words unless they are adding to the writing in some way.

We want all entries… Poetry, fiction, whimsical pieces. Each judge has they’re own favourite style so don’t be afraid!
Our basic guidelines are: –

– up to 250 words,
– must be written with the genre ‘Sussex Crime’ in mind,
– must be in before the deadline,
– ideally no swear words, graphic horror, or overly sexual pieces,
– otherwise anything goes!

Each entry to the competition will be provided with 100 words of constructive feedback from the judges.
Most writers go on to use this feedback, improve the piece, and submit it to other publications.
Winning is a great way for new or established writers in any genre or form to gain recognition (and really helps when you send out letters to agents or publishers to say your work has been independently recognised – and paid for!).

By winning or shortlisting for the competition your work will be displayed on our website and emailed out to our entire mailing list. If shortlisted you’ll also have your work read by a published author and by a distinguished local crime publisher.

Sussex Libraries are also actively promoting this to their readers group and database of 140,000 people!

All this is a firm step towards growing your author fan base.

The winning entry will receive a £25 cash prize, have their work published on our website and sent out to the mailing list, and have their piece promoted through West Sussex Libraries extensive mailing list.
We will hold the publishing rights for your piece for three months from when we announce the winner, which will allow us to promote your work through our channels.
During this time period we may publish your piece in any format (everyone loves a podcast, right?).
